Switchgrass (Panicum)

Switchgrass is a warm-season prairie grass with upright foliage and airy flower panicles that turn to seed heads in autumn. Panicum virgatum varies widely in height and spread across its many cultivars, so use the mature dimensions of the selection you purchase when planning spacing. ## Garden Use Use it for movement and fine texture in sunny borders, native plantings, rain gardens, or erosion-control areas. North Carolina State Extension describes the species as clumping and upright, with pink-tinged panicles and fall color; its general species dimensions span about 3–7 ft tall and 2–3 ft wide. Seed heads can provide food and cover for birds and small wildlife. ## Growing Conditions Full sun encourages the strongest, most upright growth, while partial shade can lead to a looser habit. Switchgrass adapts to clay or sandy soils and to moist, occasionally wet, or occasionally dry conditions. Allow enough space for the selected form and its spreading roots. ## Maintenance Cut back the previous season’s stems in late winter or early spring before new growth.
