Corn poppy (*Papaver rhoeas*) is an annual of European and Asian origin with papery flowers, usually vivid red with dark markings. Named forms can have other flower colors. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/papaver-rhoeas/) describes plants about 0.23–0.46 m tall, while BC's chart gives 0.6 m; growing conditions and selections affect size.
## Growing conditions and care
Provide full sun and moist, freely draining soil. It performs well in cooler summers and can reseed vigorously; manage seedlings and check local guidance before naturalizing it. Flowering season varies with climate. Remove dead stems and accumulated dry seedpods where local fuel-management instructions require it. This species is distinct from the catalog's field poppy *P. dubium* and from perennial poppies.
## Firewise source
[FireSmart BC](https://firesmartbc.ca/landscaping-hub/fire-resistant-plants/) lists *Papaver rhoeas* for the Extended Zone. The source designation does not remove the need to manage seasonal dieback; follow local spacing, irrigation and maintenance guidance.
