Mountain Coconut is a high-elevation Andean palm with a single, smooth gray trunk and a graceful crown of long, drooping, pinnate leaves. Its botanical name, Parajubaea cocoides, is accepted by Kew; the species is native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. [Kew Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/182952-2) and [Project Palm](https://projectpalm.net/species/parajubaea-cocoides) provide botanical and horticultural details.
## Form and setting
The leaves are dark green above, paler beneath, and arch outward from the crown. Mature plants bear branching flower clusters with pale cream-yellow flowers, followed by small green fruits. Project Palm describes a solitary habit and a mature height around 16 m; allow ample space for the crown and eventual trunk.
## Growing conditions
Give young palms a sheltered position with partial shade, then provide full sun as they mature. This species suits warm-temperate gardens with only occasional light frost. Use loamy, free-draining soil and water regularly while it is growing; drainage is important, especially in cool weather.
## Maintenance
Protect young plants from harsh exposure and prolonged frost. Keep the root zone freely draining, and apply palm fertilizer occasionally during active growth if needed. Avoid routine pruning; remove only damaged leaves when they are fully dead.
