Create design onlineAbout Balloon Cactus
Balloon cactus, Parodia magnifica, is a rounded South American cactus that gradually becomes taller and more columnar with age. Its ribbed green body and golden spines create a compact sculptural accent, and mature plants can produce large yellow flowers in the warmer months.
## Form and flowers
The RHS describes solitary globose to cylindrical stems with dense yellow spines and sulfur-yellow summer flowers. Chicago Botanic Garden also records yellow to orange flowers from late spring into summer. Botanical references may use the synonym Notocactus magnificus for this same species. Published mature size ranges broadly from about 4–20 inches in height and spread. ## Growing conditions
In a frost-prone climate, grow it in a container with a free-draining cactus mix and ample light; a bright position with some protection from harsh midday sun is suitable indoors. Keep the mix on the dry side between waterings. RHS hardiness ratings use UK conditions and are not directly interchangeable with USDA zones.
## Maintenance
Water thoroughly during active growth, then let excess water drain and the mix dry before watering again. Reduce watering in the cool, low-light season and keep the plant frost-free. Handle carefully because the stiff spines can prick skin; use folded paper or thick gloves when moving or repotting it.
