Create design onlineAbout Englemannii Virginia Creeper
Engelmann’s Virginia creeper is a small-leaved form of Virginia creeper with a denser growth habit, while retaining the vigorous, self-clinging character of the species. Its five-part foliage colors strongly in autumn, making this form useful on a substantial support where it can be kept within bounds.
## Identity and appearance
The RHS treats this plant as Parthenocissus quinquefolia var. engelmannii and lists Ampelopsis engelmannii as a synonym. Wisconsin Extension describes ‘Engelmanni’ as a small-leaved selection with denser growth. The RHS reports a mature height of 8–12 metres and spread of 4–8 metres. ## Siting
This deciduous climber suits a sturdy wall, fence or trellis in full sun or partial shade. It accepts chalk, clay, loam or sand where drainage is adequate. Its flowers are inconspicuous and green; blue or black berries may follow. The RHS rates it H6 under UK conditions; that rating is not a USDA zone.
## Maintenance
Prune in spring to restrain vigorous shoots and keep the vine from spreading into nearby plants. Provide strong support and space for its mature reach. Wear gloves when handling because the RHS identifies it as harmful if eaten and a possible skin irritant.
