About Canby's Mountain Lover

Canby’s mountain lover is a low, evergreen shrub with glossy leaves and a naturally spreading habit. Oregon State University describes it as about 15 inches tall, making it useful where a compact, ground-hugging cover is wanted. ### Site and appearance The [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/paxistima-canbyi) notes small greenish or reddish flowers, white fruit and hardiness around USDA Zone 4, with Zone 3 shown as marginal. Its foliage can bronze in fall, adding seasonal color while remaining evergreen. Use it in well-drained, light soil; sun encourages a more compact form, while part shade is also suitable. ### Placement Plant in a rock garden, along a low bank or at the front of a border where its outward-growing branches can spread. Space plants for their mature colony rather than shearing them into a formal hedge. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and prolonged dry weather. Light pruning can keep the plant low or remove stray growth, but allow its natural spreading form to develop.
