About Cassian - Dwarf Fountain Grass

‘Cassian’ is a clump-forming fountain grass with green foliage and cream-pink bottlebrush plumes in midsummer. The [Hoffman Nursery plant profile](https://hoffmannursery.com/plants/details/pennisetum-alopecuroides-cassian) describes the plumes from July through September and notes orange to red fall foliage. Its size can reach about 2 feet before flowering and 3 feet with the plumes. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun in evenly moist, well-drained soil. The foliage and flower heads bring the strongest display in a sunny position. The nursery lists a zone range, but does not label it as a USDA hardiness rating, so this record leaves USDA zones unspecified. ## Landscape Use Use ‘Cassian’ in a sunny border or mixed planting where its upright clump and seasonal plume display can add texture. Leave space around the plant for foliage and flower heads to arch outward. ## Maintenance Cut old foliage back in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Divide the clump when it becomes crowded, and water during extended dry periods.
