About Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass Grass

‘Hameln’ forms a compact fountain of green leaves topped by buff-white bottlebrush plumes in late summer and fall, then develops golden-russet autumn color. This smaller, earlier-flowering fountain grass suits sunny borders and courtyards, and its clumping habit keeps the display gathered. [Monrovia](https://www.monrovia.com/dwarf-fountain-grass.html) lists USDA zones 4–11 and a typical 2–3 ft height by 1–2 ft spread; [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/cenchrus-alopecuroides-hameln/) notes its container use and deer resistance. ## Placement Give it full sun and average, well-drained soil, avoiding heavy, wet clay. Set it near the front of a mixed border or use a container of at least three gallons, as recommended by North Carolina Extension. Leave room for the foliage and flower heads to arch outward. ## Maintenance Water deeply and regularly through the first growing season, then reduce watering as the plant establishes. Cut the old foliage back just before new shoots appear in late winter or early spring. Monrovia recommends avoiding heavy, wet clay soils and reducing watering after establishment.
