Create design onlineAbout First Knight™ - Napier Grass
First Knight™ is a striking Napier grass selection with upright, sword-shaped foliage in near-black purple tones. Its bold vertical form and late-season violet flower spikes make it a dramatic focal point in a warm, sunny garden.
## Garden Use
The exact selection is listed at [J. Berry Nursery](https://www.jberrynursery.com/portfolio/first-knight-grasses) at 4–5 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. Use it as a specimen or a dark backdrop for brighter flowering plants, and allow ample room for its upright leaves. The plant is sold as First Knight™ and is identified in its patent as ‘Tift 10’ (USPP25515).
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun and keep evenly watered while it establishes; the nursery recommends moist soil during establishment. Its dark foliage is strongest in a warm, bright position. The [patent record](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP25515P2/en) documents the selection and its origin at the University of Georgia Research Foundation.
## Maintenance
Leave the upright foliage in place for seasonal structure, then remove old growth as new shoots begin in spring. Use gloves when handling the firm leaf blades.
