About Karley Rose Dwarf Fountain Grass

Karley Rose is a named selection of oriental fountain grass, Pennisetum orientale ‘Karley Rose’ (PP12909). Its upright, arching leaves form a clump, while the flower plumes develop from rosy purple tones toward tan as they mature. ## Plant profile The exact plant page reports mature foliage height of 36–40 inches and a spread of 24–36 inches. Flowers are listed from early summer, and the cultivar patent describes an extended display that can continue into autumn in Connecticut. The patent records deep purple flowers and green foliage; color and flowering vary with season and growing conditions. ## Site and care Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Walters Gardens lists low to average water needs, and describes the selection as drought tolerant once established. Avoid persistently wet soil; water during establishment and during prolonged dry spells. Position the clump where its long-lived plumes can rise above the foliage. ## Maintenance Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before fresh growth appears. The cultivar was patented as USPP12909P2, granted September 3, 2002.
