Tall Tails - Fountain Grass

Tall Tails is a vigorous, upright, arching selection of oriental fountain grass, Pennisetum orientale ‘Tall Tails’. Plant Delights introduced it in 1998 from a USDA forage-crop seed-bank lineage, and its long plumes rise above a graceful foliage clump. ## Plant profile The plume colors shift from pink to pale ivory and tan as they mature, with flowering through summer and fall. Plant Delights lists the full plant at about 72 inches tall; its description places the foliage clump near 4½ feet, with plumes extending higher. Dried heads can remain decorative into winter. ## Site and care Grow in full sun; partial shade can help in hot climates. Use light, well-drained soil. Once established, this grass tolerates relatively dry soil, though container plants need more regular watering. It forms an upright, slightly loose clump and is described as deer resistant. ## Maintenance Cut back dry foliage at the end of winter as new growth begins. In cold-winter gardens, mulch the crown for protection.
