Create design onlineAbout Princess - Napier Grass
Princess is the more compact sister selection to Prince, with wide upright leaves that turn deep purple in summer heat. This ornamental Napier grass provides a bold foliage accent in large containers and sunny landscape plantings.
## Garden Use
The exact [Princess selection page](https://ecgrowers.com/pennisetum-princess-38/) describes a 48-inch annual fountain grass with purple foliage, red seedheads, and exposure from full sun to part shade. Its listing calls it a smaller form than Prince. The [breeder’s patent](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP17728P3/en) records USDA Zones 8–10 as its perennial range and notes that it can be grown as an annual farther north. Use it where its arching leaves have space to spread.
## Seasonal Care
Warm summer weather deepens the purple foliage. Plant it after frost danger has passed, and water regularly while it establishes and during extended dry periods.
## Maintenance
In climates where it does not survive winter, remove it after frost. Where it persists, cut back dry foliage as new growth starts in spring.
