About Waggon Wheel® - Beardtongue (Penstemon)

Waggon Wheel® is a low, mat-forming Penstemon caespitosus selection with tiny evergreen leaves and blue-to-lavender tubular flowers. Its small scale and low water needs make it useful as a living mulch among taller perennials or as a spiller over rocks and walls. ## Plant Profile Plant Select lists the exact selection as ‘P022S’, at 1–2 inches tall and 12–14 inches wide, hardy in USDA zones 4–7. Flowers appear from early June into July. The evergreen mats are native to mountainous parts of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Arizona. ## Growing Conditions Choose sun or part sun and well-drained soil. Plant Select lists clay, loam, sandy, and gravelly soils and low-to-xeric water needs; the plant adapts to clay loam but should not be overwatered. Its pollinator-friendly flowers and deer resistance suit waterwise rock gardens and small spaces. ## Maintenance Give it room to spread without foot traffic because the semi-woody branches can be damaged by walking. Growth can be slow; trim tips on young plants to encourage branching.
