About Bush Beardtongue (Penstemon)

Bush penstemon (Penstemon fruticosus) is a low, woody perennial with an evergreen crown and bright lavender-blue flowers. The USDA Forest Service describes it as normally about 2.5 feet tall, with a crown usually wider than tall and dense clumps that can spread by layering stems. [Its species account](https://www.fs.usda.gov/rm/pubs/rmrs_gtr136_2.pdf) also notes that natural dieback can leave an open center. ## Garden Use Use this woody beardtongue for a low mass, a rock garden, or a sunny border where its blue-violet flowers can be seen. Its persistent leaves provide structure outside the flowering period, while upright stems rise from the crown. The Forest Service account notes that the species is locally abundant in some areas and useful for ground cover and wildlife habitat. ## Growing Conditions Penstemons generally perform best in full sun and well-drained soil, according to the [North Carolina Extension plant profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/penstemon/). For this western species, avoid sites that stay saturated and allow the crown to broaden. Its woody base and layering stems create a clump that can spread gradually. ## Maintenance Allow room for the crown to widen, and periodically remove dead central material if it becomes untidy. Retain healthy evergreen foliage when pruning. Keep the soil draining freely and water new plantings as they establish.
