Pike’s Peak Purple is a Mexican–American hybrid beardtongue selected from crosses made by Bruce Meyers. Its narrow dark green leaves form a mound, and violet-purple flowers appear through summer. Plant Select identifies the selection as P007S and gives mature dimensions of 14–18 inches tall by 12–14 inches wide, with USDA hardiness zones 4b–8. The [Plant Select plant profile](https://plantselect.org/plant/penstemon-p007s-mexicali-hybrid/) includes those measurements, the bloom period and growing conditions.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun or part sun. It tolerates a range of sites and soils, including clay, loam, and sandy soil, and prefers moderate to dry watering once established. Its compact mound suits borders, and the flowers provide nectar for pollinators. Plant Select also reports deer resistance.
## Maintenance
Remove spent flowers to prolong bloom. Seedlings may not retain the parent’s flower color, so pull unwanted seedlings if needed. In disturbed soil, occasional aeration around the plant can improve growing conditions. Trim old stems in spring.
