About Red Rocks® - Beardtongue (Penstemon)

Red Rocks® is a compact Mexican–American hybrid beardtongue with glossy green foliage and a low mound of narrow leaves. Bright rose-pink flowers open in succession through summer, bringing a long season of color; the formal selection is Penstemon 'P008S', introduced in 1999. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun or part sun and well-drained clay, loam, or sandy soil. The Plant Select profile gives mature dimensions of 14–18 inches tall by 12–14 inches wide and USDA hardiness zones 4b–8. It describes the plant as suited to moderate-to-dry conditions and notes deer resistance and value to pollinators. The selection was made by Bruce Meyers from crosses between Mexican and American wild penstemons. See the [Plant Select Red Rocks profile](https://plantselect.org/plant/penstemon-p008s-mexicali-hybrid/) for regional details and planting guidance. ## Landscape use The compact mound fits a sunny perennial border, rock garden, or other small-space planting. Its upright flower spikes provide a clear vertical accent above the foliage. ## Maintenance Deadhead spent flower stems to encourage continued bloom. In spring, trim old stems and tidy the clump as new growth begins.
