Penstemon pinifolius is a low-growing subshrub native from Arizona and New Mexico into northern Mexico. This species has narrow, needle-like foliage and red, tubular flowers; individual plants and garden performance can vary across its native range. The species is useful in sunny, well-drained rock gardens, dry borders, and other sites suited to plants from seasonally dry habitats. Provide good drainage and avoid persistently wet soil, especially around the crown. Water during establishment, then adjust supplemental water to local rainfall and soil conditions. Full sun and open air circulation help maintain compact growth and flowering. Allow room for the plant to develop without crowding. Penstemon species generally benefit from a spring cleanup after winter; remove damaged growth while preserving healthy new shoots. For broader growing guidance, see [Kew Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:808242-1/general-information) and the [Royal Horticultural Society penstemon guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/penstemons/growing-guide).
## Garden use
Use it in sunny rock gardens, gravel beds, or the front of a dry border where its fine foliage and red flowers can be seen close up. Plant with other species suited to the same drainage and exposure.
## Growing conditions
Choose a sunny position with freely draining soil. Water regularly while roots establish, then water more sparingly according to local conditions. Avoid waterlogged winter soil.
## Maintenance
In spring, remove dead or damaged stems and tidy the plant without cutting into healthy new growth.
