About Desert Beardtongue (Penstemon)

Desert beardtongue is a tall, spring-flowering Penstemon native to dry landscapes of central Arizona. Its upright stems carry pink to purple tubular flowers, while the clasping upper leaves and waxy stems give it a distinctive form. ## Garden character University of Arizona Cooperative Extension describes plants 20–40 inches tall, flowering from April through June. The flowers rise above toothed foliage, and the capsules that follow add structure after bloom. Use it in a sunny, open planting where its vertical stems can be seen and where dry, gravelly conditions suit the surrounding plants. ## Site and care In the wild it occurs in desert washes, canyon floors, desert scrub, and pinyon-juniper communities on gravelly, dry soils. Select a well-drained site and avoid routinely wet ground. The source describes a species habitat, not a guaranteed garden performance range, so adapt watering to local rainfall and establishment needs. ## Maintenance Leave some mature capsules if seed and late-season structure are useful; otherwise remove spent stems after flowering.
