About Native Roots Cutleaf Beardtongue (Penstemon)

Native Roots Cutleaf is a selected Richardson’s penstemon with an open, airy habit and large, deep-pink flowers. Plants of the Wild notes that the selection was chosen for darker, larger flowers and describes spreading spikes that flower through much of summer. ## Garden character The exact selection is offered for dry, rocky sites and reaches about 16–24 inches tall. The species has a shrubby base, erect stems, and deeply toothed to cleft leaves; its pink to rose flowers are tubular. This combination makes the plant a useful flowering accent for rock gardens, dry slopes, and other well-drained spaces. ## Site and care Grow it in full sun. The named selection is described as drought tolerant, but young plants still need attention while roots develop. Favor drainage and avoid treating the species as a plant for persistently wet soil. ## Maintenance Keep the spreading flowering stems in view by allowing room around the plant. Remove spent stems after the main summer display if a neater outline is preferred.
