About Cliff Beardtongue (Penstemon)

Cliff Beardtongue is a low, creeping form of Penstemon rupicola, with rounded blue-green leaves and rosy-pink, tubular flowers that open in late spring. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the species as an evergreen sub-shrub, suitable for full sun or partial shade and well-drained chalk, loam, or sandy soil. [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/12477/penstemon-rupicola/details) ## Growth and setting The RHS lists a maximum height of up to 10 cm and a spread range of 0.1–0.5 metres. The species profile is broad guidance for Penstemon rupicola; named plants can show variation. Its compact, spreading growth suits rock gardens, crevices, and other well-drained places where a small ground-hugging perennial can be seen up close. [Burke Herbarium](https://burkeherbarium.org/imagecollection/taxon.php?Taxon=Penstemon+rupicola) ## Seasonal interest The species' rosy-pink flowers appear in late spring above evergreen foliage. Site it where drainage is sharp and provide either sun or light shade. ## Maintenance Keep the root area well drained and remove spent flower stems after bloom if a tidy appearance is desired.
