About Wave® Purple Classic Spreading Petunia

Wave® Purple Classic is a spreading petunia selected for purple flowers and a broad, low-growing habit. PanAmerican lists a 5–7-inch height, 36–48-inch spread and sun exposure, and identifies it as an All-America Selections Classic. ## Garden use Use Purple Classic to trail from a hanging basket or large container, or to create a low flowering edge in a sunny bed. Its listed spread is about 3–4 feet, so give the branches room to extend without being crowded by neighboring plants. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Illinois Extension notes that petunias tend to flower poorly in heavy soils. For container plantings, check the soil often because pots dry quickly; water thoroughly and allow drainage rather than letting the pot remain waterlogged. ## Flowering PanAmerican describes flowers along the length of Wave branches and flowering through the main season without trimming back. Purple Classic begins bloom about a week later than Wave Lavender and Misty Lilac, a useful distinction when planning a coordinated container or seasonal bed. The spreading habit needs room more than routine shearing; trim only if shaping the display is desired.
