About Sun Spun® Blue - Petunia

Sun Spun® Blue is a compact annual petunia whose single flowers open dark violet and age toward blue-violet, with purple veins. The exact cultivar record calls the selection ‘Balspunlu’ and identifies Margaret M. Hurkman as breeder and Ball Horticultural Company as holder. ## Flowers and form The Canadian cultivar description records an upright plant with thin shoots and single, strongly undulated flowers; the upper surface shifts from dark violet to blue-violet as blooms mature. The [CFIA variety record](https://active.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/pbrpov/cropreport/pet/app00008395e.shtml) supports those selection-specific details. Ball FloraPlant’s [Sun Spun series guide](https://www.ballfloraplant.com/Tools/PdfAssets/pdfpage.aspx?pdfid=13) describes the series as mounded-upright and compact, with a ball-shaped habit suited to pots and baskets. ## Growing conditions Treat it as a warm-season annual for containers, baskets, or sunny seasonal beds. Provide full sun and a well-drained potting medium. The Ball guide advises letting the medium dry between waterings while avoiding sustained wilting, and notes that the series is susceptible to root disease in constantly saturated media. For general garden culture, [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/hortanswers/PlantDetail.cfm?PlantID=761&PlantTypeID=1) also recommends full sun and moist, well-drained soil. ## Maintenance Check containers through hot or windy weather and water when the medium begins to dry. Remove faded blooms to keep the plant neat and encourage continued flowering; petunias respond to deadheading. The CFIA records a withdrawn Canadian application, which does not establish a current U.S. patent status. See the [Illinois Extension deadheading guidance](https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2026-07-17-deadheading-more-blooms).
