Sun Spun® Burgundy is a compact annual petunia with purple flowers and dark-purple veins. The cultivar’s exact denomination is ‘Balspunburg’; its Canadian variety record names Margaret M. Hurkman as breeder and Ball Horticultural Company as holder.
## Flowers and form
The [CFIA description](https://active.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/pbrpov/cropreport/pet/app00007587e.shtml) characterizes the plant as upright, with medium-thickness shoots and single purple flowers marked by dark-purple veins. It measured a 25.6 cm average width in a greenhouse comparison, a trial measurement rather than a guaranteed landscape size. Ball FloraPlant’s [Sun Spun series guide](https://www.ballfloraplant.com/Tools/PdfAssets/pdfpage.aspx?pdfid=13) describes a compact, mounded-upright form for pots and baskets and an early-flowering series that can provide a long season of color.
## Growing conditions
Use in a sunny container, hanging basket, or seasonal bed. Provide full sun and a well-drained growing medium. Ball’s guide recommends allowing the medium to dry between waterings while preventing sustained wilting, and avoiding constantly saturated media. General petunia guidance from [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/hortanswers/PlantDetail.cfm?PlantID=761&PlantTypeID=1) likewise calls for full sun and moist, well-drained soil.
## Maintenance
Monitor moisture closely in baskets and pots, where the medium can dry quickly, and remove faded flowers for a tidier display and continued bloom. Petunias respond well to deadheading. The CFIA record states that Canadian plant breeders’ rights were surrendered; this historical record does not establish current U.S. patent status. Consult the [Illinois Extension deadheading guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2026-07-17-deadheading-more-blooms) for technique.
