About Ribbon Grass

Ribbon grass ‘Picta’ is a deciduous ornamental grass grown for long, narrow leaves striped lengthwise in green and white. It spreads horizontally as well as growing upright, so allow room for its running habit and keep it contained where nearby planting must be protected. ## Plant Profile North Carolina State Extension lists mature dimensions of about 2–4 ft. tall and 2–5 ft. wide, with USDA hardiness zones 3a–9b. The foliage is showy through the growing season; small pink or white flowers appear in summer. [NCSU Extension profile for ‘Picta’](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/phalaris-arundinacea-picta/) ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade. The species profile describes tolerance of clay, loam, sand, shallow rocky soils and a range of moisture conditions; ‘Picta’ is also described as moisture-tolerant. As with other ribbon grasses, it can become invasive, so use a contained area and monitor its spread. Check local guidance before planting near natural areas, and remove escaped shoots promptly.
