Create design onlineAbout Buckley's Quill Mockorange
Buckley’s Quill is a compact, erect mock orange with fragrant double white flowers whose narrow pointed petals create the cultivar’s quill-like appearance. Oregon State University describes mature plants at about 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, with abundant late-spring bloom.
### Site and season
The [Oregon State University plant profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/philadelphus-buckleys-quill) recommends sun to part shade and notes the plant is hardy to USDA Zone 4. Its adaptable nature suits mixed shrub borders and specimen use, while the white flowers bring fragrance to late-spring gardens.
### Garden character
This deciduous shrub has opposite, ovate, yellow-green leaves and compact clusters of double flowers. Use it where the flowering stems can be seen and smelled from a walkway, seating area, or garden entrance. Allow room for its mature spread rather than planting tightly against a path.
## Maintenance
For established mock oranges, remove a few of the oldest canes at ground level in late winter or early spring. To shape after bloom, shorten flowered shoots to strong buds; this general guidance is described in the [Philadelphus growing guide](https://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/66134-product.html).
