Tree Philodendron is a large evergreen foliage plant with a stout trunk and deeply divided leaves that can reach about a metre long. In warm climates it makes an architectural garden shrub; elsewhere it can be grown as a spacious indoor specimen.
## Form and placement
The accepted botanical name is Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum; Philodendron bipinnatifidum and Philodendron selloum remain familiar synonyms. Its broad crown and mature spread need room. The Royal Horticultural Society describes partial shade, sheltered exposure and moist but well-drained loam; North Carolina State Extension also lists it for indoor containers and warm-weather patios.
## Growing conditions
Use a rich, organic, free-draining medium and keep it evenly moist without leaving roots in standing water. Bright filtered light supports strong, deeply lobed foliage, while some shade protects leaves from scorching sun. Bring container plants indoors before cold weather; the species is tropical and is not suited to freezing conditions. Its established size varies with climate and growing space, so allow room for the crown rather than treating a young plant's dimensions as permanent.
## Maintenance
Remove damaged foliage with clean tools and wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust. Philodendrons contain irritating sap and should be kept away from children and pets that may chew them.
