About Birkin Philodendron Plant

Birkin is a slow-growing, self-heading philodendron with dark green leaves marked by creamy white pinstripes. It suits a bright room or sheltered patio and can grow to about 3 feet tall and wide as a houseplant. ## Foliage and placement Each leaf has its own stripe pattern, and mature growth may show cream, yellow or light-green markings. The upright plant does not need a climbing pole. Use it as a tabletop accent while young, then give it space as the clump matures. North Carolina State Extension lists Birkin for containers, houseplants and patios. ## Growing conditions Provide medium to bright indirect light; direct hot sun can scorch foliage. Plant in a loose, free-draining potting mix. Let the upper several inches dry before watering again, then drain the pot fully. Birkin dislikes waterlogged soil, but prolonged drying can also slow growth. Average household humidity is usually suitable; grouping plants or using a humidifier can help in especially dry rooms. The plant is a cultivated sport of Red Congo, and its growth can vary. ## Maintenance Repot when roots become crowded, moving up only one pot size. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed. Philodendrons contain calcium oxalate and can irritate skin or cause discomfort if chewed, so keep the plant away from children and pets.
