Create design onlineAbout Early® Coral - Tall Phlox
Early® Coral is a tall garden phlox in Phlox paniculata, with the upright growth and summer flower clusters typical of the species. Garden phlox grows in full sun or partial shade and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil ([NC State Extension species guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/phlox-paniculata/)).
## In the garden
Place it in the middle or back of a perennial border, where its stems can rise behind lower edging plants. Leave open space between clumps to support air circulation and make watering and seasonal cleanup easier. It also suits a cottage garden or a mixed planting of long-lived perennials.
## Growing conditions
Choose a sunny site or one with light afternoon shade. Prepare fertile soil that holds moisture but drains freely, and water during dry summer weather. A layer of mulch helps keep the root zone cool; avoid overhead watering when possible so foliage dries quickly.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flower clusters to keep the planting tidy and reduce unwanted seedlings. Cut stems back to the ground in winter and clear old foliage from the bed. Inspect leaves during warm, humid weather for powdery mildew, and thin crowded growth if air cannot move through the clump. Divide established plants when they become congested or lose vigor.
