Early® Purple Eye is a compact, upright garden phlox with purple flowers and lighter centers. The Dümmen Orange Early® catalog lists this selection at 12–14 inches tall and 14 inches wide, flowering in late spring in USDA Zones 3–9.
## In the garden
Use it toward the front or middle of a sunny perennial border, allowing neighboring plants enough room for air circulation. Garden phlox generally prefers moist, well-drained soil; part sun is often tolerated, and watering may be needed in hot, dry weather. The series entry describes an upright habit and full-sun exposure. ## Maintenance
Divide established clumps in spring or late summer to early fall. Keep new divisions watered as they establish. Garden-phlox cultivars vary in powdery-mildew response, so maintain good spacing and clear diseased foliage in fall rather than assuming resistance from the series name.
