About Early® Red - Tall Phlox

Early® Red is an Early® series garden-phlox selection with scarlet-red flowers, green foliage, and a semi-upright habit. Dümmen Orange describes it as compact, early flowering, and capable of flowering in its first year; its catalog lists 12–14 inches tall, 14 inches wide, full sun, late-spring flowering, and USDA Zones 3–9. ## In the garden Use the clump in a sunny perennial border or combination planting. Garden phlox prefers moist, well-drained soil and tolerates part sun, though watering may be needed in hot, dry weather. Allow air to circulate around the foliage: many garden-phlox cultivars are susceptible to powdery mildew, and good spacing helps reduce disease pressure. ## Maintenance Water during dry spells and remove infected leaves and fallen stems in autumn. Divide established clumps in spring or late summer to early fall, then keep divisions watered.
