About Scarlet Flame - Creeping Phlox

Phlox subulata 'Scarlet Flame' is a low, evergreen perennial that forms a spreading mat of needle-like green leaves. In spring, rosy-red flowers with darker centers brighten the groundcover as it fills between stones, along an edge, or across a sunny bank. ## Size and placement Plan for a mature mat about 4–6 inches tall and around 24 inches wide. Give plants room to spread, and use them at the front of a border, on a rock garden, or where their low profile can soften a path edge. Full sun encourages flowering; partial shade is also suitable. ## Seasonal display and growing conditions The evergreen foliage can hold the ground through winter, while the main flower display comes in spring. Plant in moist but well-drained to well-drained soil; the cultivar is listed for USDA zones 3–9. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/72865/phlox-subulata-scarlet-flame/details) describes its mat-forming habit and site preferences, and [Wayside Gardens](https://www.waysidegardens.com/products/scarlet-flame-creeping-phlox-43558) lists the cultivar’s dimensions and growing range. ## Maintenance Little routine pruning is needed. After flowering, trim only the shoots that stray beyond the space or need shaping; avoid cutting into bare, woody stems.
