About Date Palms (Phoenix)

Phoenix is a genus of evergreen palms with either solitary or clustered stems, narrow pinnate leaves and hanging flower clusters; the genus includes many distinct species and sizes. A genus-level planting should therefore be matched to the identified species and its local climate rather than treated as one uniform landscape palm. ## Identification The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew accepts Phoenix and lists 14 accepted species, including the familiar Canary Island and date palms. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the genus as evergreen, with linear leaflets and fleshy oval fruits. Use those traits for recognition, while checking the selected species for its mature form and fruiting behavior. ## Growing For container culture, RHS guidance for Phoenix species uses a loam-based, free-draining compost and bright light; it recommends watering during active growth and reducing water in winter. Outdoor suitability varies among species, so use a protected frost-free site only where the exact palm is appropriate. Avoid assigning a hardiness zone from genus-wide information. ## Maintenance Keep the crown clear of damaging contact and remove only dead or unsafe fronds with appropriate care; palms can have sharp foliage. In containers, check drainage and reduce watering during cool, low-light periods. See [Kew’s Phoenix genus account](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:31428-1) and the [RHS Phoenix profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/197812/phoenix/details) for identification and general context; consult its species profile for site-specific care.
