Create design onlineAbout Dwarf Date Palm
Phoenix acaulis, the dwarf date palm, is an accepted Phoenix species native from northern India through the Himalaya to Bangladesh. Kew describes it as a perennial subshrub of wet tropical biome; that species-level form is useful context when distinguishing it from the larger tree palms in the same genus.
## Identification and site
The Royal Horticultural Society describes Phoenix palms as evergreen, with narrow pinnate leaves and solitary or clustered stems. The common name does not establish a precise mature height or a USDA zone, so retain the species identity and use local, species-specific advice for outdoor placement. In cooler regions, a bright protected growing space is a cautious option for container culture.
## Growing
For container-grown Phoenix palms, RHS species guidance uses loam-based, free-draining compost and bright light. Water while the plant is actively growing and reduce watering in winter; adjust the routine to the pot, temperature and growth rate. Kew’s account places P. acaulis in a wet tropical biome, but that habitat description is not a garden hardiness rating.
## Maintenance
Keep the pot draining freely and avoid leaving the root zone waterlogged. Remove only damaged or dead foliage with care around the sharp leaf segments. See [Kew’s Phoenix acaulis account](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:668898-1/general-information) and the [RHS Phoenix genus profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/197812/phoenix/details); the latter provides general genus context, not a species-specific size or zone.
