About Phoenix atlantica

Phoenix atlantica is an accepted palm species native to Cape Verde, where Kew describes it as a tree of the subtropical biome. It remains distinct from other accepted Phoenix species, including Phoenix canariensis and Phoenix dactylifera, so their cultivation details should not be transferred as if the plants were interchangeable. ## Identification and placement The RHS describes Phoenix palms generally as evergreen, with pinnate leaves and hanging flower clusters followed by fleshy oval fruits. Kew’s species account supplies the identity and native-range context for P. atlantica, but does not establish a USDA hardiness zone or a garden-size range. Choose outdoor placement only where local conditions suit this species; in cooler climates, consider a bright, protected container setting rather than assuming broad outdoor hardiness. ## Growing RHS cultivation notes for other Phoenix species recommend a free-draining, loam-based compost and bright light for container plants, with watering during active growth and less in winter. Treat those as general palm guidance and adapt them to the plant’s actual growth and environment. Do not infer drought tolerance or a specific soil pH from its native range alone. ## Maintenance Maintain free drainage, monitor moisture as temperatures change, and handle the leaf segments carefully. Treat its subtropical origin as context, not a USDA hardiness rating; use local species guidance before outdoor planting.
