About Senegal Date Palm

Phoenix reclinata is a clustering palm native to Africa and Madagascar. Its arching pinnate leaves, reddish-brown fibrous leaf sheaths and tendency to form thickets give it a bold, tropical outline; ripe yellow-orange fruits have sweet flesh and are reported as edible. Singapore’s NParks profile lists it for parks and gardens and describes full sun, moderate water and well-drained soil. ## Landscape Use Choose a large open site where a spreading clump can mature without narrowing paths or competing with nearby plants. The hanging fruiting clusters add seasonal interest, while the many stems create a strong specimen or screening effect. This species combines a substantial leafy crown with edible fruit and a clustered growth habit. ## Maintenance Grow in full sun and provide moderate irrigation while keeping the root zone well drained. The leaflets near the frond bases are modified into spines, so avoid placing the palm beside narrow walkways and wear protective clothing when pruning. Remove old fronds carefully without cutting into the crown. [NParks’ profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/6/2664) gives species-specific descriptions of its form, foliage, fruit and cultivation in Singapore.
