Create design onlineAbout Yellow Wave™ New Zealand Flax
Yellow Wave flax forms an evergreen clump of arching leaves striped bright yellow and green. Dark-red flower spikes are possible but seldom produced, according to the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/12800/phormium-tenax-yellow-wave/details).
## Landscape Use
Use as an architectural accent or in a sturdy container with good drainage. Monrovia lists a typical garden size of 3–4 ft tall and 4–5 ft wide; the RHS gives larger eventual maxima of 1–1.5 m tall and 1.5–2.5 m wide, so leave additional room where growing conditions are favorable.
## Growing Conditions
A sunny to lightly shaded site with well-drained soil suits this plant. [Monrovia](https://www.monrovia.com/yellow-wave-new-zealand-flax.html) lists USDA zones 8–11 and recommends regular watering during the first growing season, then occasional watering once established.
## Maintenance
Remove old leaves before new growth emerges and divide clumps every two to three years in early spring. In frost-prone areas, protect container plants over winter.
