About Cape Fuchsia

Phygelius aequalis, or Cape fuchsia, is a South African perennial with nodding tubular flowers carried along one side of the flowering stem. In nature it occurs along rocky stream banks in open woodland and forest, and in gardens it appreciates moisture with good drainage. The [South African National Biodiversity Institute’s PlantZAfrica profile](https://pza.sanbi.org/phygelius-aequalis) describes its habitat, identifying features, and cultivation. ## Appearance and garden use The one-sided flower arrangement helps distinguish this species from P. capensis, whose flowers are spaced more evenly around the stem. Flowers are reported in red or cream tones, and the blooms attract bees, butterflies, and birds, including sunbirds. The species is useful in mixed borders, large pots, and other settings where its flowering stems can be viewed at eye level. A published garden account describes a wild plant around three feet tall and eighteen inches wide; actual dimensions vary with site and cultivation. ## Growing conditions Provide rich, well-drained loam with compost and a sunny or lightly shaded position. Plants near water or receiving regular summer irrigation grow well; do not let them sit in poorly drained soil. Deep shade can produce lanky growth. ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage a bushier plant. Propagation is possible by seed, stem or tip cuttings, and rooted suckers. Protect the crown where severe frost can damage top growth.
