Create design onlineAbout Yellow Groove Bamboo
Yellow groove bamboo is an evergreen, running bamboo with upright green canes marked by a yellow groove and narrow leaves. North Carolina State Extension lists this species at 12–18 feet tall and 12–25 feet wide, and warns that it spreads rapidly into dense stands ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/phyllostachys-aureosulcata/common-name/yellow-groove-bamboo/)).
## Landscape fit
Use it only where a tall screen is useful and the planting can be contained. NC State lists screening as a landscape use and hardiness across USDA zones 4a–11b. The yellow sulcus on the culms and occasional zigzag near the base help distinguish this species; do not confuse it with yellow-caned selections such as ‘Aureocaulis’.
## Growing conditions
Provide full sun, moist but well-drained soil, and ample space for a running rhizome system. The species is native to northeastern China. Its fast growth can create a dense stand quickly, so plan the planting boundary before putting it in the ground.
## Maintenance
Inspect the perimeter during the growing season and cut or dig out rhizomes that cross the intended boundary. Keep paths, foundations, drains, and neighboring beds outside the containment area. Thin dead or damaged canes at ground level and remove fallen leaves when they obscure the planting edge.
