About Nanus Ninebark

Nanus is a distinct dwarf ninebark selection with a rounded, dense habit and dark green leaves that turn yellowish in autumn. The University of Illinois woody plant database describes it as 2–5 feet high with smaller, less deeply lobed leaves. [University of Illinois plant profile](https://woodyplants.nres.uiuc.edu/plant/phyopna). ## Garden use Use Nanus where the compact form fits a shrub border or a smaller planting area. Like other ninebarks, it is deciduous and bears clusters of small pale flowers in early summer; the species also develops peeling bark and small fruits. [North Carolina Extension ninebark guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/physocarpus-opulifolius/). ## Growing conditions The species grows in full sun to part shade and tolerates a range of well-drained soils. A site with some afternoon shade can help in hotter parts of its range. ## Maintenance Prune only if needed, just after flowering; ninebark flowers on older growth. Removing older stems selectively helps retain the natural rounded outline.
