Obedient plant is a clumping, native North American perennial with upright flower spikes and a long summer-to-fall display. North Carolina Extension describes Physostegia virginiana as growing best in moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or part shade, with a quick-spreading habit in rich, damp ground ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/physostegia-virginiana/)).
## Garden use
This species suits native, meadow, rain-garden and pollinator plantings where its spread can be managed. Its flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and deer generally avoid browsing it. The NC State profile gives a mature height of 3–4 feet and a spread of 2–3 feet, and lists USDA hardiness zones 2a–9b. Pale purple-to-rose flower spikes open from the bottom upward from summer into fall.
## Maintenance
Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained, especially while plants establish. In fertile, consistently moist beds, leave room for the clumps to expand and divide them every year or two to contain spread; shallow roots make unwanted shoots easier to remove. Division can be done in spring or fall. Tall stems may need support in shade, hot weather or rich soil. Remove invading shoots and spent stems as needed, and check foliage for aphids or fungal spotting during the growing season.
