Vivid is a compact, upright obedient plant with dense spikes of dark purplish-pink, tubular flowers and toothed, lance-shaped leaves. The flowers rise above the foliage in late summer, and its flowers are carried in upright spikes above the foliage.
## Growing Conditions
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Vivid reaches about 50 cm tall, with published width estimates that vary. Use it in a perennial border or cut flower arrangement; its flowers can attract butterflies, and the cultivar is reported to resist deer. [The RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/74299/physostegia-virginiana-vivid/details) gives its mature form and cultivation notes, while [the Chicago Botanic Garden profile](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/physostegia-virginiana-vivid-vivid-obedient-plant) describes its compact habit and garden traits.
## Maintenance
Cut stems back to the base in winter. Divide established clumps in late winter or early spring before new growth, and check the plant's spread as it settles into the garden.
