Create design onlineAbout Columnaris Norway Spruce Tree
Columnaris is used for upright, narrow forms of Norway spruce, with dense branching and dark green needles. The name has been applied to multiple clones, so mature dimensions and precise form vary among plants.
## Garden use
The Royal Horticultural Society places Picea abies ‘Columnaris’ in the Norway spruce Columnaris Group and reports that plants may exceed 4 metres after ten years, ultimately growing taller than 12 metres with a spread of 1.5–2.5 metres ([RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/44449/picea-abies-columnaris/details)). A conifer reference explains that Columnaris has been used for several clones and is best treated as a horticultural group rather than a single cultivar ([Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/picea/picea-abies/)). Confirm the plant’s provenance and expected mature size when selecting a site; a narrow outline still needs room to grow.
## Maintenance
Plant in full sun and deep, moist but well-drained soil; RHS lists clay, loam and sand with an acid or neutral pH. Routine pruning is not required. Keep the root area drained, water during establishment and dry spells, and monitor for conifer aphids, red spider mites, adelgids and honey fungus.
