About Gold Drift Weeping Norway Spruce

Picea abies 'Gold Drift' is a golden-leaved, weeping Norway spruce with lime-green spring growth that becomes bright yellow in late spring and summer where foliage receives sun. Its branches may trail over a wall or ramble across open ground, or they can be trained upward on a support. ## Growing Conditions Choose a moist, well-drained site in sun or partial shade. The [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/picea-abies-gold-drift) identifies Bob Fincham of Coenosium Gardens as the introducer and describes the plant's weeping habit, spring color, USDA Zone 3 hardiness, and possible sunburn when young in the Pacific Northwest. [Iseli Nursery's exact Gold Drift page](https://iselinursery.com/colorful-conifers/picea-spruce/picea-abies-gold-drift/) reports that fully exposed foliage turns vibrant yellow and that mature size varies with culture. ## Landscape Use Stake it for an upright weeping specimen, or let its branches cascade over a retaining wall or along an open bank. Keep neighboring plants far enough away to avoid hiding its seasonal color. ## Maintenance Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes and avoid hot, dry conditions or wet feet. If training it upward, use a sturdy stake and check ties regularly as the stem grows. Allow space for untrained branches to trail outward.
