Picea engelmannii, known as the Engelmann Spruce, is a slow-growing, narrow conical evergreen that typically reaches heights of 60 to 100 feet in its native high-altitude habitats. It features stiff, four-angled needles ranging from dark green to a striking steel-blue, which emit a distinct odor when crushed. Highly valued for its resonant tone wood used in acoustic instruments, it thrives in moist, well-drained soils and full sun. This hardy conifer is exceptionally cold-tolerant but struggles in hot, humid climates.
