Engelmann spruce is a native western North American evergreen with a narrow, conical crown and sharp blue-green needles. In the wild it is associated with high, cold mountain forests and generally occupies cool, moist sites.
Oregon State University recommends full sun and moist, well-drained soil, and reports a USDA hardiness threshold of Zone 2. Published mature-size estimates vary by setting: Oregon State lists trees around 80 to 100 feet tall, while an Idaho USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service guide gives 30 to 45 feet. The U.S. Forest Service describes the species’ high-elevation range and cool-site ecology. Allow generous room for a large tree and do not treat a young or planted specimen’s size as its ultimate height. [Oregon State University’s profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/picea-engelmannii), the [U.S. Forest Service review](https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/piceng), and the [USDA NRCS conifer guide](https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/plantmaterials/idpmstn7711.pdf) document these differences.
## Maintenance
Keep soil moist but well drained during establishment and provide a cool, open site. Avoid waterlogged planting holes and leave room for the mature crown.
