McConnell’s Gold is a conical white spruce whose new growth emerges bright yellow-gold before maturing to medium green in summer. The Dawes Arboretum identifies the named selection, gives USDA Zone 2, and describes an eventual size near 30 feet tall and half as wide.
## Seasonal character and use
The spring flush is the main ornamental feature, making this evergreen tree effective as a specimen or in a mixed conifer border. Its foliage changes through the growing season, so the established medium-green color should not obscure the brief golden display on new growth. Dawes records growth of roughly 6–12 inches per year, a useful reminder to leave room for a full-sized tree rather than treating it as a dwarf spruce. See the [Dawes Arboretum profile](https://dawesarb.arboretumexplorer.org/taxon-25278.aspx) for the exact cultivar, USDA hardiness, color sequence, and size context.
## Growing conditions
Give the tree space for its pyramidal crown and a site appropriate for a large evergreen. Keep the root area watered during establishment and avoid conditions that remain saturated. The cited arboretum record supports the species-level identity and the cultivar’s garden use; it does not establish a special soil or irrigation requirement.
## Maintenance
Apply mulch over the root zone, leaving the trunk clear. Prune only to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain a strong leader. Allow the spring shoots to finish coloring before considering any light corrective pruning.
