About Montrose Charm Columnar White Spruce

Montrose Charm is a compact, fast-growing, columnar white spruce with dense blue-green needles and a soft, fuzzy appearance. Utah State University’s Varga Arboretum lists it at about 20–30 feet tall and 6–8 feet wide, a useful fit for a narrow screen or border when given room to mature. ## Form and placement The upright shape makes this evergreen useful where a conventional broad spruce would overwhelm the planting. The arboretum notes its use in privacy hedges, borders, and even as a potted seasonal tree. A second nursery profile also describes a narrow, compact form and gives a comparable 6–8-foot spread. See the [USU Montrose Charm profile](https://extension.usu.edu/botanicalcenter/trees-of-varga-arboretum/montrose-charm-spruce) and [Bron & Sons plant record](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/all/montrose-charm-spruce-36615). ## Growing conditions Plant in a site with space for the mature height and a soil profile that drains adequately. The USU record says it adapts to different soil conditions and is drought resistant once established; provide regular water during establishment and during extended dry periods. Its evergreen foliage supplies year-round structure, while the dense branches and columnar habit bring vertical texture. ## Maintenance Mulch the root zone without covering the trunk flare. Check for winter breakage after heavy snow and remove damaged branches. Prune sparingly to preserve the natural columnar outline; avoid routine shearing that would create dense outer growth and shade the interior.
