Purple Likiang spruce is a long-lived evergreen conifer valued for its dense, pyramidal form and vivid purple young cones. Its mature size can be substantial, and published accounts give different hardiness ranges; site it with room to develop.
The [NC State Plant Toolbox](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/picea-likiangensis-var-purpurea/) describes USDA zones 6a–8b and a 30–40-foot height, while [Dawes Arboretum](https://dawesarb.arboretumexplorer.org/taxon-25456.aspx) lists zone 4 and reports unusually large old trees; the [American Conifer Society](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/picea-likiangensis-purpurea/) notes the purple cones and the synonym Picea purpurea. The recorded 11 m height and 5 m spread reflect larger reported specimens, not a guaranteed garden size. Choose a sunny position with moist, well-drained soil and allow air and light around the crown. Evergreen foliage provides year-round structure, while the young cones add seasonal color as they mature.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and in prolonged dry periods. Maintain mulch over the root zone without piling it against the trunk, and avoid waterlogged soil.
