Oriental spruce, also called Caucasian spruce, is a large, dense-conical evergreen with short, glossy dark-green needles. Red pollen cones appear in spring, while young seed cones are purple and mature brown.
## Form and landscape use
Native to the Caucasus and northeastern Turkey, this species makes a long-lived specimen or architectural tree where there is room for its eventual height and spread. The Royal Horticultural Society describes a mature spread of roughly 4 to 8 metres and notes that the tree may take 20 to 50 years to reach its ultimate size. The American Conifer Society gives USDA Zone 5 hardiness; that source does not establish an upper zone limit.
## Siting and care
Choose full sun and moist but well-drained soil; the Royal Horticultural Society recommends acidic conditions. The species can also tolerate alkaline sites, according to the Morton Arboretum, so assess local soil and drainage rather than relying on pH alone. Allow ample room for a broad, mature crown and avoid persistently wet ground.
## Maintenance
Oriental spruce generally needs little pruning. Remove dead or damaged branches and keep the root zone mulched, with mulch clear of the trunk. Monitor for common spruce pests, including adelgids, mites, and conifer aphids, and address stress from poor drainage early.
