Picea orientalis 'Skylands' is a golden-needled Oriental spruce with a dense, upright conical form. New foliage is especially bright yellow in spring and can remain more golden in full sun; shade gives the needles a greener cast. North Carolina State Extension lists it as a specimen conifer and notes that strong afternoon heat can scorch the foliage. ## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun for the strongest golden color, or partial shade where afternoon heat is intense. Provide moist, well-drained soil and shelter from cold, drying winter winds. NC State lists zones 4–7; the Royal Horticultural Society also recommends moist, well-drained, acidic soil.
## Landscape use
The narrow pyramidal habit and bright foliage make Skylands useful as a specimen or vertical accent. Leave space around the crown so the color and form remain visible as it matures. Its golden needles provide contrast among green evergreens and broad-leaved shrubs.
## Maintenance
Water consistently during establishment and during extended dry periods. A layer of mulch helps moderate soil moisture, but keep it clear of the trunk. Remove damaged branches as needed and avoid heavy pruning that would disrupt the natural conical outline.
