About Wells Deer Run Oriental Spruce

Picea orientalis 'Wells Deer Run' is a compact, narrow Oriental spruce with blue-green needles and a pyramidal outline. Oregon Pride describes short, tight needles, pendulous spring cones, and slow growth; Utah Conservation Garden Park also notes the narrow branching and spring cones. [Oregon Pride Nurseries](https://www.oregonpridenurseries.com/picea-orientalis-deer-run) · [Utah Conservation Garden Park](https://conservationgardenpark.jvwcd.gov/plants/3201/deer-run-oriental-spruce) ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. The species tolerates gravelly ground, and protection from harsh winter winds can reduce foliage stress. Maintain even moisture while the plant establishes and during prolonged dry weather. ## Landscape use Its compact, upright shape suits a small evergreen accent, a mixed conifer planting, or a narrow background planting. The blue-green needles and pendulous red spring cones add seasonal detail without relying on a broad, spreading canopy. ## Maintenance Water deeply during establishment, then adjust irrigation to rainfall and soil drainage. Mulch over the root zone while keeping the trunk base open. Remove broken or dead branches when needed; avoid shearing the plant into a form that hides its natural narrow outline.
